ZXR400 Down Under

G'day all, recently got hold of a 1989 H1 that looked like crap but I could tell the engine was solid. Fairings in pretty bad shape but useable. Spent 2 weeks going over the whole bike before taking it out. Cost me AUD$2000 (1250 quid) to buy and I've spent about $400 on bits and bobs.

My last bike was an SV1000S so jumping on a screaming 400 inline 4 was a big difference, but I like that you have really ride it and work the engine. It's pharking fantastic. So light and flickable, plenty of thrust above 10K rpm, comfortable enough (I'm 5' 5")

Getting parts here in Aus is a drama cos the model was only ever a grey import. The few that are here are mostly raced in the Formula 400 class. The bike isn't legal for learners here so it gets overlooked. The VFR/RVF 400 is road legal for learners and usually 5-6 times the price.

Will do take it the track on late Sept and see how it goes without Mr Plod hiding around the next corner.

tkyou

Not much of the original paint scheme left - Black it all out :smt004

With a few tweaks you'll soon have it kicking out healthy numbers at the rear wheel, is it still speed restricted or has someone rectified that ?

Another H owner - the group is growing :smt041

MM!

Hey razzcolio, thx for ur comments. Paintwork was shitehouse so i went the kwik fix with some stickers and decals.

I was wrong, the VFR isnt learner legal but the RVF is! It's decided here by power/weight ratio not cubes. The juniors here can buy learner legal 600's....

I've got the bike up to ~180 on the clock so I'm guessing the restrictor are gone. May not have been there in the first place.

Any dramas not using the hoover tubes?

180Km/h is when the speed restriction kicks in - you should be able to take it off the clock in 5th so 190+

Hoover tubes supply cool air into airbox area , never a bad thing but plenty folks run them with out - personally it's not a ZXR until it has the hoover tubes :smt004

JDM bikes & cars are all speed restricted since 1989 , earlier bikes have "speed over " warning lamps for you to ignore :smt002 Not sure about cars but it's funny looking into a WRX with a 180Km/h clock in it :smt005 Hence they are all generally chipped here.

Imports are full power so all ZX6 & 10s come from Malayasia and you can order in pretty much anything else - this means no changes being made come the 2yr MOT
