About to start racing
I have a standard zxr J1 and i'm going to race it on the Irish short circuit clubmans races. I have had the front forks rebuilt along with the callipers and master cylinder. The rear shock has been uprated to a hagon model along with braided hoses and sintered pads. I am going to attempt to fit an L model fairing and cheap rear sets along with racing tyres (any recommendations?). Is there any more cheap recommendations to improve the performance of the zxr without heavy engine tuning? I plan to replace the cam chain and tensioner and rebuild the and set up the carbs. (there is also a full stainless steel race system on the bike). Clutch seems fine and no piston slap but i may get the valves done and steering head bearings before the trials to get my license. Please let me know if I am missing anything?

I would only race on Pirelli Diabolo Supercorsas

Other than that, a ramairbox will help once the jetting is corrected, try 108 as a starting point with the main air tubes blocked.

Get a decent rear shock!
Not sure what master cylinder you have but some 400 models are crap and others ok.
Later radial master cylinders make a huge improvement with std calipers.

Just the standard Niffin and tockios both have been rebuilt with new seals and internals. Last few track days i've done they seemed to do the job we'll enough. I'm not looking to spend masses of money yet on a brembo master cylinder, havent even got the race license yet.

Yes, rear shock is important - You can get a ZX6 or GSXR K& shock to fit quite easily*, but it might need respringing, and if you have a bit more money, revalving.
Maxton respring them for 80 quid ( ish)
Cheap tip is a GSXR K7 radial master cylinder*, cheap as chips and very powerful...get on ebay
* got all of these mods on our current bikes

Will the rearsets from an L model fit onto my H model ok? I checked the microfiches and the part numbers appeared the same but then again the fitments may be differnt.

I think all the banjo bolts are the same....don't forget you need separate lines with the link being above the lower fork yoke, so a double banjo and dual lines would fit the bill.

Re: About to start racing
Currently bidding on a k8 gsxr 1000 master cylinder can anyoen confirm that this will fit my curretn braided hoses they have a double banjo connection at the master cyltinder or will the bnjo bolt fitting be different? Got myself a set of pirelli super corsas like you suggested cant afford the rear shock im afriad ill have a very standard bike on the start line lol. Im also geting heavy chatter under braking from the handle bars thats teh head bearings right? warped discs would be a pulsating lever but I think it may be loose head bearing right????

Re: About to start racing
Without a good rear shock the rear wheel can also start to "stamp" under heavy braking making it difficult to turn it. Most noticeable at Mallory coming into the hairpin. Head bearings are a relatively simple fix, warped discs you would feel as a pulsating lever.

Hello Bert
Welcome along - I race a 400 in NI too. 400's running with ( 450's) & MOTO 3 (125GP) in 2013
Good value for Supercorsa - most people prefer these. I used them until this year and was asked £275 for a set at Cookstown.
Started using Avons from McKillops and they are grand.

Re: About to start racing
At least on the roads a new set should last a full season on a 400 so tyres prices aint really an issue
