engine cutting out

Just passed test and already having difficulty with my 1991 ZXR400.
Having warmed the bike up and rode for a few miles i stopped for petrol, had great difficulty getting the bike to restart. Had to sit and wait 5 or 10 mins before it would start again. Next day stalled at traffic lights and again had difficulty getting it started.
Anybody any ideas to help out a novice.
