Easy Exhaust Stud Extracting

Post by MillaMeter »

First of all, I don't hold any responsability to any damage you may cause to your machine.

When it came to changing my downpipes, 2 nuts that where rusted on the studs decided to shear off.
The most commanly known word said round about now is either "F**K!!" or "B****X!!"

Here's a method I tought myself.
Note: This method is to get a snapped stud out of the engine whilst there is still thread showing out of the engine.

Step 1. Grab yaself 2x M6 nuts.

Step 2. Put 1 nut on the remaining showing thread but try not to tighten the nut all the way in so it meets the stop end.

Step 3. Put nut 2 on the thread aswell and turn nut 1 counter clockwise and nut 2 clockwise at the same time so they lock against each other.

Step 4. Put a 10mm open end spanner to nut 1 and turn counter clockwise untill the whole stud comes out.

Now this worked a treat for me so I shouldn't seem why it wouldn't for you.

I would post pictures but the studs are now long gone, sorry :(

Regards

Rich

stud extractors are the devils tools. if you snap one of them (quite likely) you are royally screwed.

spot on, exactly what i was getting at... by the time youve drilled out a big enough and deep enough hole to be able to safely use a stud extractor, you may as well leave it in the drawer and carry on drilling out the stud.

i hate extractors.

personally, when I did it, I opted for sh*tb*llockyf*ckc*nts :smt002

I tried the two-nut approach, and it didn't work, so I went for welding an offcut of steel plate to the stud so it was like a giant key which I could then unscrew :smt003

Obviously you can only do this if you happen to have a MIG welder in your garage.
In the garage:
Kawasaki ZXR400 L3 - shiny
Suzuki DR800 - bouncy
1978 Suzuki GS400 - PROJECT RETRO RACER!
Kawasaki GPz500S - for sale soon
Honda CG125 BR-J - in bits

I did this once with a great big drill bit and drilled a hole that removed broken stud and all the metal around it...........then I took the head to see my favourite alley weilder he filled the hole and I ground it flat ......ish...and drilled and tapped a new hole and fitted a new stud.........................

Oh I forget to mention that a stud ectractor broken off in my first efforts
