I thought I better start a new thread now I'v introduced myself.
Don't expect a quik turnaround with this one as I'm swamped with work at the moment and also need to sell a few bikes to make room to start this one properly.
Lets start with a few before pics. Not very good but you get the idea. Looks OK from a distance

On to the engine. It looks to have a G stamped on it.

Not had a chance to look at the bike yet. But I did glance at its front forks and can't see any adjusters. Bummer
I also noticed a switch hardwired to the fan. It worked briefly then just stopped. The small amount of history I do have shows its had the head gasket done. But weather it was on this engine or another who knows.

The front forks only have the bottom compression dampers from the J2 onwards.

Can you get a better picture of this G or J punch mark on the RHS side of the engine, as I can't see it in your pictures...

Banner I was always under the impression the H/J1 had the compression on the base of the forks as well?

see.... I still learn something new everyday :pmsl

J2 was where they got a bit more serious with the SP :excited

The J2 has flatslide carbs too. J1 is stock carbs, slotted cams, close ratio gearbox.

makes sense! i have the slotted cams in mine, non adjustable, i have no idea if i have the close ratio gearbox, i have owned the bike 10years, i have never tested it against another ZXR to even know!

that said, i had a look at my cyl head, i have nothing stamped on it so i dont even know if it is a J or standard H! mine IS the H1 chassis, the engine is from that frame as well... the chassis number is really early compared to what I have seen - ZX400H001081

Sounds like your bike has lost its original engine if there’s nothing stamped on block, both of my J1’s have a “J” stamped just under the R/H radiator bracket as Banner rightly says. Bummer...nice looking bike though, just put one of mine up in the classified section if you want another! haha.
You’ll know if it is/was a J1 by checking the frame number, if it starts ZX400H-300 (then 3 numbers) it’ll be a J1.
