Got an L9 zxr 400 with 8000 miles on the clock.

My mate rides a zzr 600, M reg don't know what model that is as such. He said he's altered his ignition timing, not a lot 3-4 degrees iirc.

Said that made a huge difference mid range and recommends doing that on my zxr.

What are people view on this? Has anyone done it to this model.

racers/tuners do it, but by how much i dont know.. there's no such thing as an "ignition advancer" for the zxr afaik, so folks just slot the mount for the pickup and move it a few mm... again, im not sure how far, but yeh, 3 or 4 degree's sounds like its all you'd need ..

im intending on doing this on the H1 im rebuilding in the garage .. which may even be .. today !

well, after posting here i thought it'd be daft not to try it ..

so i did..

removed the pickup from the bike, put it in a vice, removed the lips off the back with a file, then elongated the holes by about 1.5mm with a small needle file.. then popped it back in sliding it towards the front of the bike compared to its standard position..

then hit the starter ..

idle speed had increased by about 200rpm, so tweaked that down and blipped the throttle ... feels WAY more responsive.. havent had a chance to ride it though as the heavens opened about 5 minutes after i finished the bike .. so am going to the pub.

all in, i reckon its about 2-3 degree's more static advance than stock. Didnt want to go too far before i'd had a look to see if i had any spare pickups.

I'd recommend loctiting the mounting bolts if you do this mod as you dont want it slipping about.

well, its good.. but not having tested it back to back against a stock pickup i cant say how much of it is the pickup mod and how much is other tweaks.. and i havent done many miles on this bike anyway, (nurse it home, strip it and rebuild it is all ive done so far) but it has def got a good mid-range for a zxr, which im guessing is from doing the pickup.

get a spare pickup and try it.. if you dont like the results, put it back to stock.. with the fairing lower off its a 10 minute job to remove/modify and/refit so you may as well.

plan on doing this today, have a spare pickup so worth doing.

btw, where is the pickup mounted on the bike?

right hand side under the ignition cover.

does what it say's on the tin mate. worth doing.

I managed to buy a 4 degree advancer for my ZRX, basically the disk with the cutouts that pass the pickup are a bit further forward.
The main difference I found was that it picks up a bit quicker, but doesn't improve the power (if that makes sense).
I also noticed that it pops more on the over-run (which I haven't witnessed on the ZXR anyway).
There is a bloke in the states who makes them (Ted's ignition advancer) and they are bloody good quality.
If anyone is interested I can hunt out the details and see if he does them for the ZXR?

Looks like they are only made for a couple of bikes (not including the ZXR), but I'm sure if he had enough requests, or one for several, he may be tempted.
