Help needed on sprocket setup

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Help needed on sprocket setup

Post by p.lally »

Hello, I am needing some advise on sprocket setup, I am currently building a bike which I intend to use on the track.

I am wanting it set up more for acceleration rather than top speed (but not that much it runs out of go)
Can anyone please advise on which setup to go for???

I'm thinking of 14/47

What tracks are you racing on? Different set ups for different circuits!

Hi, hopefully first one on this bike at cadwell (next month), but then probably any of the ones up North, Anglesey, oulton park or donnington

I used 14-46 for Donny and Brands Indy
15-46 for faster tracks like Snetterton and Silverstone

hi, obviously the amount of tuning and more importantly how hard you ride will affect what your gearing you require, however for both Oulton and Cadwell I would suggest 14/48.
(I'm assuming your on a standard L gearbox)

Good luck and have fun.

Stuart.

Hi and thanks, I am looking to hit cadwell shortly and I have just bought a 14 and 47. My bike is a h2 model.

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter, you will be in the correct area with 14/47, it will probably feel as though its to short as you bimble round for the first couple of laps, but once you have it opened up at reving to 15k it will be fine. H2 gearbox is very close to the common L box so you will be fine, its only the H1 that's shorter.

Have fun, Stuart.

I like to have a selection of sprockets to choose from. I've got rears from 40 up to 50 and fronts from 13 to 16

After an initial estimate and lap or two I can then select the best set up from the options available.

What you're actually trying to do is get the gearing so that at the end of the longest straight the bike is 6th gear on your bikes red line and your just about to brake for the next corner. You can of course play with the gearing to suit a particular section but that will come at a cost elsewhere.................as ever there is a compromise to be had.
Wind speed and direction can be a factor too as can wet or dry track conditions

Cargo - what gearing do you run at Armoy on the 400?

Good question. I've only done it once and I don't think I have a note of it in my book

Prob something tall ish Tandragee gearing might be a decent starting point.
