VIN number ... year of production

Hi all,

is there a way to determine a year of production from the VIN #?

VIN: ZX400L-xxxxxx

I assume one of the x could represent model year?

The link below suggests so, but I cannot figure it out ... they suggest that VIN is 17 digits long since 1981 which doesn't seem to be true?
