oil light

Post by carsounds_dan »

hi, im the happy owner of a L4 ZXR.. and its all im ever gunna need. but ive noticed that the oil light stays on when its waiting to start. it goes out when its running though, only started after a bit of a ride back 8 miles.. nothing over 70. someone had knocked it over in the workshop at work, so when i picked it up it had been sat on its right hand side if that helps.. it sat for 10 minutes upright before i rode it though.
cheers

The oil light will be lit when the engine isn't runing and just after you've switched the engine off, this is due to the oil pressure, if the engine isn't running then you have no pressure and hence the light being on, as soon as you start it up it should go out.

you need to worry if it comes on when the engine is running, meaning low oil and even worse low oil pressure, buggered engine

you probably notice it now because your looking for damage after it was knocked over.

hope this helps

staying on when the engine isn't running is normal. It will only go out once there is sufficient oil pressure.
blipping the throttle will usually be sufficient to get the oil pressure up.
You have checked that the oil is between the minimum and maximum levels though?

the warning lights come on with the ignition so you know the lights are working.if they didn't come on then your bulb has blown.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

hi all,
looks like i was panicing over nothing, so all good :D
where abouts are the max/min marks for the oil? i can see the little oil window on right of the bike, with a little white arrow. the level sits about 1mm below that.
cheers

There should be two marks, one near the top of the window and another near the bottom.
