'home made' paint job?!?!

Post by andyvanderpandy »

hi there folks, so ive just spent an hour reading the various posts about attempts to spray bikes in the comfort of your own garage with a few tins from halfords (my personal favourite being the matt black VFR!)

now ive been thinking of going along these lines myself, just a simple black and white job, then get it lacquered in a proper paintshop. im fine with all the prep etc, and have sprayed many things with a can in the past, but i have two questions.

gloss or matt? or will it not matter once its laquered?

will the laquer used at a pro paintshop 'melt' this stuff?

To be honest with ya, I would personally go for the gloss finish, it will give the bike that awesome shine when the sun hits it. The bike will look very tidy and a lot newer then it really is. (My personal opinon) matt finish will give the bike that old rattish effect making the bike maybe look a lil untidy and old. I always see matt black bikes as rat bikes which have been either not well looked after or just a lazy spray painter.

Laquer is just a clear coat to protect the paint and give it that final gloss finish, so I doubt it very much that laquer will eat away at the paint you'll be using. As long as you give the object you are painting enough time to dry in between coats, there shouldn't really be a problem.

Hope this helps

it looks ok as it is now, but close up its not great. the tank and seat fairings are both pearlescent, but the main fairing isnt. also i stuck the decals on over the laquer, as i wanted the pink ones off sharpish!

so i like the black and white, but that would be a whole respray. but im also thinking its a quack, so it must stay green! and if i keep the same design i wont have to spray wheels n top fairing. oh what a dilema!

ALSO, is the pearlescent a factory colour? i thought it was aftetmarket, but i think ive seen others the same.

Hi,

To be honest with ya mate, I would keep it the colours they are now. You can't own a kwaka unless it has green on it :smt003

Besides, what's gonna be more visable at night (which is quite important I'd say) Bright Kawasaki lime green or black?

EDIT:
If you really want to make your bike look cool, get some ally polished and add some decals (I did) ;)

All the best

i agree leave it as it is, you're saying it looks tatty but if you respray it with matt black its gonna look worse.
