Petrol/fuel pump

Post by unclesparks »

When you switch on the ignition the petrol/fuel pump primes and makes aclicking noise. How do you know if this is knackered or not and what are the symptoms. Mine sounds like it starts to prime but then sounds like the battery is flat and slows down until it stops completely however the battery is new and charged and it always fires up. Are they all like this or is the pump on the way out. How sound it sound?????

tbh you can hear the relay click but never heard the fuel pump, pull the pipe off the carbs and see if it pumps fuel through, stick the other end in a bottle or summat to catch the fuel.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

its a low pressure puimp mate, it only pumps till the float bowls are full, then it stops and give the occasional click to top them up.. yours is fine.. if it was dead the bike wouldn't run. Been there myself a few years back.

This may not be of use to you as this is quite an old question but for your info the bike does not need a fuel pump fitted to run, The previous owner of my L4 had probs with the pump and ended up removing it and running the fuel feed as gravity only straight from the tank, she rode the bike for a year like this .

When i test rode the bike i found it would not pull in the top half of the rev range but was ok for just pootling around town,(This was fine for her as this is all she did)..it was only after the test ride when i mentioned the lack of performance that she remembered it had no pump fitted. As i said probably not much help to this question but may help if your pump fails and you need to use the bike..

Not sure if it will run with a broken pump still fitted though..
