Sump Woes.

Have swapped my exhuast system today (that was a bitch in its own right) and took the opportunity to change my oil and flter, which I do on a regular basis anyway. I finally finish putting the system together, and go to tighten the sump nut, it gets to its tightening point and then just goes. I take the nut out and theres most of the sump thread wrapped around it. I think i must have done it up to tight in the past and its just given way today.

So what are my options? Would getting a new sump be the easiest thing? Whose got one?

you could try and rethread the old one but chances are slim if its stripped the sump, try putting a slightly bigger bolt in, let me know size of the original and i'll see what i got at work.Failing that a new sump which means a new gasket too.

can get it helicoiled, or take it down to an engineering company and get it re threaded with a biger bolt.

No need to put any where near that sort of torque on a sump nut its not taking any load at all.

If it's like mine, you're likely to have cracked the actual casing, so helicoils and bigger bolts and stuff won't work!

If you're really stuck, you can put some of that liquid metal bondy stuff on and it should be ok until your next oil change, but again if there's a crack might still leak, and isn't exactly the best option...

Either way I'd get the sump off and have a good look, so you might as well buy a gasket.

Think I've still got my old cracked sump somewhere if you want to quick fix yours and have a go at repairing mine?

Im going to get the sump off tommorow and have a look. It isn't cracked, its deffinatley the thread as like i said, it came out in shards.

If all else fails, Glyn, I'll take you up on that mate.

You could get a good alloy welder to fill the hole where the sump bung went then drill it and tap to any size you like


Also you could just leave it welded up and for future oil changes just drop the sump off

Got the sump off after many hours of hitting it with a hammer, threads fecked, its just left a clean whole where it used to be. Also, one of the stems for the exhaust headers has just snapped. Are these bikes made of fucking cheese????

If your sump has been on there for a long time it comes as no surprise that it was stuck.............There are if memory serves me right prise points where a flat bladed screw driver can be use to ease it off ...............hitting it with a hammer is not such a good idea.

No doubt when the exhaust stud broke you had a spanner or ratchet on it ?............it's only M6 and very exposed so no surpised that the nut was seized on..............a little patience is what is needed............some WD40 or similiar will help leave it to soak overnight.............a bit of heat will also help...............

And when you rebuild it a little anti sieze compound of some kind will make it easier next time or better still make up some stainless steel ones.

i told him to hit it, worked for mine although i did say use a soft hammer not a sledgehammer!

The stud has snapped, leaving the rest in the allocated hole making it impossible to get out. I coated them in WD and left them to soak for an hour.

its difficult to know exactly what to do with a sump problem like this,

i would rather speak to him before commenting on his behalf as to a solution......

but im pretty sure Jamz would simply wrap it in duct tape!
