Manifold studs

When I took the headers off the bike I had a bit of trouble getting the brackets on and off the studs on the engine...they almost looked bent. I want to replace them...but are they replaceable? And if they are how do I go about doing it without mashing the threads with a pair of pliers??

Also, is cradley the best place to get an end can to downpipes gasket?

if your gonna replace them all i wouldnt worry about mashing the threads. But yes you can remove them and replace with newer ones. A stud extractor is the best tool (obviously), either that or mole grips to remove them but i think thats a risky tool since they may shear and youll have to drill them out and possibly re-tap.

It shouldnt matter a great deal if they are bent tho, so long as its not causing the headers to blow i wouldnt worry about it, new gaskets should solve any leaks anyhow.

As for end can to pipe gasket yes cradley will get you one, you can use exhaust sealer to do the same job, but dont get the stuff that sets rock hard. Ive got some Wurth silicone exhaust sealer that i use for that job Its better cos it will peel right off if you need to.

If you don't have a stud extractor, the best to remove the studs would be to wind 2 nuts onto the stud and lock them together, then just wind the back nut off.

excellent, thanks guys. Yeah the header's blowing at the minute, but I'm about to put new gaskets in so hopefully that will sort it. Good to know they do actually come out though!

Liquid gasket sounds good...think i'll go down that route.

The studs are always a bitch to get out, so make life easy for yourself next time by always buying new ones! (it won't make it easier, but at least you'll have tried)

I've never taken the studs out...just when I took the manifold off noticed they looked a bit bent. If/when I do take them out though, new ones will be going in!
