alternator, reg/rec and batery

Post by 08broach »

my bike broke down last weekend, just conked out all eletrics... wouldnt bump or anything. my suspicions where confirmed by the aa man that the regulator was putting out to many volts.

I just changed them all, the battery was all swolen and clearly didnt work anymore, i found the whole thing easier then expected.

Quick question,, what was the liquid that flowed out of the alternator cover when removing it?.. smelt like petrol, why is this there?.. lube?
will let you know how it goes once the electrolyte in the new bat has settled

Is the bike back up and running yet?

The only thing you should find behind the alternator cover is oil. Im assuming you mean the case cover that has ZXR embossed on it?

If it was petrol id drain the oil out (which you should have done anyway) and let it sit for a day to let it evaporate.

try adjusting the idle, its a little black knob that pokes out underneath the frame just above the expansion bottle on the right hand side. screw clockwise to increase the idle, anti clockwise to decrease.

rev counter not working at all is unusual. How does the bike sound when its actually running?

Where abouts are you located? If your anywhere near east anglia i can come and have a look at it for you.

no i havent, i dont see how they would have been affected by the break down?
Does the cover with zxr on it need anysort of gasget? i have silicone sealent around it.. the way the power seems to be dropping when i took it up the road feals the same as my ped did when i forgot to put the exhaust gasgets back on?

my main concern is all the liquid that flowed out when i took the casing off, litrally a whole bucket, of what smelt like petrol, tho it was black like oil, not think tho

thats interesting. Only way for fuel to get in there is either past the piston rings or out the carbs into the airbox and down through the crank case breather. I doubt its through the breather because the pipe for that plugs in at the top of the air box so no chance of it getting through that way really, plus it would have to pass the air filter too....

If you can, get a compression test done, that will determine if your rings have had it. If they have, it may explain why its running so badly.

The ZXR case cover should have a gasket on it yes.
