Tuning and fitting parts to a 1993 ZXR 250

Hello all,

Ive just bought a 1993 zxr250. Ive been looking for performance parts but there isnt alot out there, however i have found a ram air box, hand made down pipes an mic end can and a set of carbs for a zxr 400. Will these fit? or can they be made to fit? The parts i have got are iridium plugs and a deristrictor.

Im also thinking of fitting zxr 400 race fairing and was wondering if this can be made to fit. The kit ive seen has the cutout for the ram air so is ideal for what im trying to achieve. Ive not had any look finding a big bore kit either if any 1 knows where i can get my hands on 1.

not had many dealings here with the 250, but iirc they are two cylinder? And if i also remember correctly they could possibly have the same motor as the GPX250(uk)/EX250(aus)/ninja 250(USA), by the way thats not the new ninja250. Not sure whats available engine wise for them but maybe worth chasing that one up?

You can make anything fit bodywork wise with time n effort, carb wise ive no idea.

The 250 is a 4cyl too Rob

It also has two versions , the H which looks much the same as the 400 H and a C model based on the L

Plastics are different as well as chassis so you would be into making brackets and spacers.

Never heard of a big bore kit for them but you do get trick bits for them out here and maybe BEET did do one back in the day ???

I can find out if putting C cams into an H engine is a worth while mod , if your struggling for parts give me a shout plenty available here used.

Do you happen to know if the 2cyl version was the same motor as the GPX/EX/ninja 250 etc??

Thanks for the replys, i was going to sell the bike but think its best i keep it. Got some big plans for the little 250, 7500 miles and an absolute minter for the age. Here are some pics. Gonna change the fairing, wheels and max out the engine, all will be kawasaki or aftermarket parts. Ill keep you updated on the gains i acheive from the motor.

[the 2cyl one] a guy i know used to own one, had a straight through race pipe for it, sounded like a scrambler on steroids!

I've heard the lil' 4 pots will do 18,000 rpm?! Must be the only thing outside of motoGP that can make that sort of noise! When you get the pipes down i'd love to hear a recording of it doing a 4th gear roll on! And i thought my 400 sounds high pitched. Rather than getting it big bored and tuned (due to scarsity of parts) you might consider fitting a turbo to it ok ok, i know it's tiny, but a smart car ran a turbo on a 600 engine, flowing about 60 odd bhp, so i figure they must make one small enough. Can't imagine it would cost any more than trying to get power out of the 250.

Tyga (USA) do some AMAZING body kits for this, but you're looking at about £750 plus shiping for the full kit (lights, mirrors, seat unit, tank cover etc!) of about £500 for the fairing & lights etc only.

Yea iv seen all the tyga stuff, very nice. Ive got my eye on a zxr 400 fairing with the cutout for ram air, im going to try and get a ram air box customised to fit with velocity stacks then chuck on a derestrictor, full system from beet nassert, ngk iridium plugs, jet kit (or bigger carbs if i can get any to fit) the rest is the norm, clutch plates, sprocket kit. Any fin else any 1 can fink of lol

if you want carbs, allen performance carbs would be the way forward, but carbs that are too big will just leave you with more flat spots than the fens! You might also want to try the stick coil mod on it if you're putting posh plugs in. there's a good thread by the mori man. Depending on your budget, dynopro might be a good place to look. think zxr400 club members (ie paid up; it's only a fiver for life!) get a 10% discount or some such.

Got a nice list of things i can do to the kwak now, thanks people, i appreciate it. What is the stick coil mod? I learned yesterday that when the derestrictor is fitted, this little baby will do a massiv 149mph, thats insane for a 250 lol. Im also trying to pick a paintscheme, i wanted to use the green and purple colours as i think they're the best on any kawasaki, just not sure what scheme. Im hoping ill have it done for summer, cant wait to get some pics and maybe the odd video. Thanks again guys!!

a derestricted 400 will top out at 141mph ish. 149mph for a 250 will only be acheived using a) a turbo or nitrous kit, or b) a big, tall, cliff!

149 KPH is a bit too slow (just under 100mph) so i imagine you've just misheard. I'd expect around 125mph since you've only got about 45bhp to play with. Just checked on Wiki, it suggests 180-200kph top speed. So i wasn't far out! On the up side almost nothing else out there revs to 18000rpm!

It does seem very high, i think my excitement got infront of me lol, but wiki is where i checked aswell, if you look at the bottom of the page it says the malaysian zx2r was made to a diff spec than the japanese bikes. The jap bikes top out at 180kph but the model built in malaysia will hit 240kph, as they're not restricted, which is 149mph. The only way to solve this is run my own tests. CANT WAIT LOL!!!!

i'd be dubious about that. 150mph would require about 80nhp minimum on a road bike. A race prepped 250 two stroke would struggle to make that much, let alone a little four stroke. i would be interested to hear the results though.
