i tend to leave my stuff unlocked, even with keys in, but i live in the middle of nowhere and figure if they've gone to the effort of coming here to nick it, they'll take it locked or otherwise .. and i'd rather get stuff back with intact locks

different story in towns/cities though .. they even broke into my garage to steal a non-runner.

Go to the Carole Nash website and get a new quote. They sent me a renewal through for about £320 a few months ago... I tried the usual online quotes, then tried Carole Nash just for a look.... and it came out £172!

Basically they make money from people too lazy to check around before they sign a renewal.

Oh, and the £320 policy was underwritten by exactly the same company as the £172 policy - so it's not that, either!

Now, just to throw that on it's head, I'm going to mention that when renewal time came for the insurance on the 'Tesse, the cheapest quote I could find online, was Direct Line (the company I was already with last year) at £1253.
That was three hundred clear, less than any other company.
Then they sent me the renewal in the post, and that came out at £1056. So in essence, the renewal quote came in just under £200 cheaper than they were online anyway, the exact reverse of your situ.

making me too relaxed though - when I was back in the UK, folks were constantly telling me to pick up my gear as i kept casually leaving stuff everywhere. My camera was only 2-30feet from me and others were getting paranoid about it !

But it is nice knowing your stuff is yours and no one (bar foreigners) has an interest in it.
