I do think it is an amazing looking bike, but think of the quality of 2nd hand car you could get for the same price!! Sure it wouldn't be as special, but i don't think I could tell the difference between that or 10K's worth of R1?? Though I've never ridden either!! lol However I could tell the difference between 10K's worth of beemer and 80K or so worth of porsche!! And i have driven both!! So for 100,000 squid I would go for a flash car, even though i would lose shite loads of money on it.

Also with 1300 miles over 17 years?? There's probably some dodgy bits that have corroded in there somewhere maybe??

Only thing that was properly special about that bike was the pistons; they were oval, and everything was made with light weight materials. Other than the oval pistons theres not much on that bike that you cant make or buy for any bike today.

And when you weigh it up with todays bikes, its not really got a pinch on anything, even when it came out it wasnt that great compared to the others. iirc it weight over 200kg dry!

But that aside, id have one, only a small number made, some exceptional engineering of the time and underseat exhausts, which, i believe were brough out before ducati came up with the idea on the 916, so the bike was quite ahead of its time.

yea that a darn good way of putting it. but if you buy the porche 2nd hand you wont loose too much cos you loose most as soon as you drive from the dealers dont you?

I'm quite amazed they didn't greatly exceed what an IL 4 is capable of, power-wise. Or maybe the road version is very heavily downtuned and restricted?

EDIT: Just found some specs for the '87 (previous) race version that have 155hp and 158kg which aren't too shabby for an endurance racer. And for the '92 road version 125hp @14500rpm and 220kg...

the racer had 24,000 rpm rev limiter . The whole point was to make a V6 type engine with with only 4 pistions. Sadly due to the oval pistions the pistion rings would always fail and the engine would eat itself. Honda fixed this in the end and learn a farking lot about pistion rings making them probably the best in the world.

Cept the veyron is bloody amazing in every way (cept fuel consumption) and does top every other road going car!!
Maybe the brabus TKR boasts better figures but i don't know if they actually put that in production..
