Cam chain tensioner query

Hi,
I want to change the clucth bracket on the cam tensioner as its bent, and I have a new tensioner only they are different.
The one on my race engine has a screw in the side of the tensioner, and my new bracket does not have this screw and the tensioner looks like its stepped with a sprung lug.
Looking at the manual, it looks like the one without the screw is from a later L4/L5 bike and is automatic, where as the one on my engine looks like its from an L2/L3 and a manual adjustment.
So..I want to put the later adjuster on the bike, as this has the better clutch bracket....is the tensioner fully automatic, or do i need to prime it or do something?
thx
Wes
