Rattley clutch question

Hi lads, I have a '93/94 L model race bike running total loss and am havin trouble with a rattley clutch that gets worse when you clutch in. Me not bein very clued in on the mechanical side of things I gave it to a mate of mine to take a look and he discovered that the magnet piece that goes around the stator had been removed which he knows can be done the likes of his vfr but is not sure if this should be done on a zxr without damage being caused to the crank as a result. Sorry about my lay man's description of this issue but hopefully someone in the know on here may understand what I'm talking about and be able to advise. Thanks in advance, Keith :smt017

Not an issue removing the magneto and retaining the starter. This would not cause any rattle. It is normal to have a rattle when the clutch lever is out, however this normally goes away when you pull the lever in. Is there any change to the noise when you pull the lever in?

Have you checked to see if the clutch hub nut is tight and also if the clutch springs are tight as well? Are there any marks on the inside of the clutch cover? You might also want to check the rivets on the back of the clutch basket as these have been known to sheer off and can rattle when they're about to expire altogether.

Latest update lads, my mate stripped the clutch down and rebuilt it again checking everything was tightned properly and we now have a clutch that doesn't rattle when the clutch is pulled but still rattles when idle. Is this normal? Also my mate Kev who is the one doin all the work for me recons there's too much play in the clutch basket. He tried 2 bearings and still no difference, anyone able to tell me how much play if any there should be inthe clutch basket?

Don't panic over the free play in the basket, this is also normal on a zxr.

Thanks stu, Kev just thought it was still a bit to noisy for his liking, suppose we'll just give it a road test now and see how we get on
