Need to adjust

I've been told by my girlfriend's dad (who knows a hell of a lot about bikes) that I need to drop 3-4mm of rebound on the forks, add some to the shock and adjust the height. He did, however, fail to explain how to. So I searched and know how to do the shock height now, and I know how to do the forks, except, is 1 click equal to 1mm or what? How many clicks is 4mm roughly? And I still dont get how to adjust the shock's rebound. I would ask him, but hes away now and I did want to do it tomorrow, before I go away on it myself, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys!

Did he tell you why?

You cant measure rebound in mm...................

Rebound damping is the rate at which the forks move back after being compressed

Compression damping is the rate at which the forks compress

Static sag is the distance between a fixed point on the bike and that same fixed point when the suspension is topped out.
That fixed point needs to be on the sprung side of the bike NOT the unsprung side

It is adjusted by the preload adjuster on the spring either on rear shock or front fork...............more pre load means less static sag

I managed to do the forks and they feel epic! It's taken ages to do it, but I've been defeated by the shock....for now. I think one learning experience a week is enough! I think I understand suspension a bit better (thanks for the replies guys) and have a comfortable front set up. Now that I've set up the front for myself, I feel great, although a little down that I couldnt do the back myself, but I shall have another go soon enough, so that if I fail, its on me :)
