6k rpm Idle?

I have just cleaned my carbs after buying a non-starter.

When i put them back on the bike she started up first push fantastic! no choke needed......

However....she just went insane! idle'ing at 6k rpm, I cut her off then she backfired the next time I started her and when straight to 8k rpm before I hit the cut off.

So.....How do I fix this? How to I set the idle?

As you can tell Im a total newbie at this, but you've got to start somewhere right? :)

RHS of the carbs there should be a cable coming from here with a finger screw on the end, you use this to adjust the amount of throttle that is applied at idle, in your case screw it counterclockwise to back off the amount of throttle at idle.

this one here - cable is on the RHS in pic, and should be there on the bike as well, it is supposed to go into a holder just above where your cooland expansion bottle's topup cap is located on the RHS of the bike.

there is a space for a screw just below my throttle (assembly), where-in the throttle cable attaches, Ill have a look around after work, thanks for the help at least I know whats missing :P

if you take off the tank and airbox and slide the 'jet and slide' back (thats the thing thats in the middle of each carb body, its spring loaded), what is the state of the butterfly valve?

it should be fully closed at idle.

it could be a number of things, from weak slide springs, to incorrect jets and needles, to the balancers being massivly out of sync.

basically if you put a screw into where the idle adjuster should be you will make the idle go faster as you will be drawing in more air...so your problem must lie somewhere else.

Ill have to take a look tomorrow morning when I get some illusive spare time.

The throttle 'hammer?' was not on the stop when I looked before, presumably there's some gunk on the springs stopping them from snapping shut.

The butterfly valves were totally closed after i stripped the carbs before so hopefully its just some sort of throttle cable/spring related problem that a bit of WD40 will iron out in no time.
Removing the throttle cable and making sure the throttle would be closed while starting it up will eliminate this idea?

Then its onto more complicated problems that I'm going to have to read up on.

fingers crossed.

It was a combination of gunk on the springs and bad balancing on the carbs.

Got the springs cleaned out, the cable oiled and I synched the carbs, it has solved the problem.

idling nicely at 1300 rpm now, ended up just using a bolt as an idle adjuster.

I love it when a plan comes together.
