Bike Died urgent help required!

Post by Leanne_zxr »

Hi everyone,

I am after some advice about my bike...

I was happily ridding my bike along when it started to not rev propely. I thought maybe it was playing up or soemthing anyways I reved it a bit higher and then the engine just died.

The symptons of the bike are ... when i put it in first gear its very easy to push forward so seems to be a lack of compression and a loss of power when I was riding it. At the moment I have only check the plugs are tight havent had them out. But what are the other things I need to check?

Ooer Leanne, just when i thought youd got a decent ZXR to ride :smt009

If you can push it easily in first gear im pretty certain thats not right, it should be difficult shouldnt it? Get the plugs out and see what thier state is, also as someone mentioned in a recent post, drain the oil, take the sump off and see if theres anything in the bottom to suggest something more serious.

I just so cant believe the luck you have had with these bikes its criminal.

Cam chain has gone ohh Im a bit gutted at the moment to say the least! It was replaced by the last owner just over a year ago so now theres no warrenty on the work :smt010 and to make matters work the bikes only got 10k miles on the clock :smt009

at the moment in the process of taking the engine out.. I've found part of a valve collet spelling? in the bottom of where the cam chain goes so it looks like its probably dropped a valve and most likely taken a piston with it.

So either a new engine or rebuild. and to make matters worse its sunny! :smt013

Not a happy bunny, never mind,

Right finally got some pics of the damage here is the piston:

and here is a broken valve and part of the cam chain which had about 5 links that have just fallen off so I'd say the people that fitted this chain - polygon engineering or whatever they are call in gloucestershire are using the cheapest nastest parts bought from china for like 50p so do not ever use them and clearly they are incapable of fitting the chain properly as it has jumped of the cog at the bottom. so please please no one ever use them again avoid them like the plague.

Anyways I have been in touch with specalised_zxr off ebay and hes sorting me out and engine and fitting it for me next weekend so I should be back on the road soon.

In the mean time ive also fitted new headstock bearings which is lucky as the old ones were knackered and rusty :smt011

Things are starting to look a little better now however I could really have done without these problems especially on such a low mileage bike! but never mind I will keep smilling!

oooeeerrr Polygon engineering are the dogs danglies in the streetfighter world Leanne, there quality of work is second to none, very highly spoken of and a very good reputation for their work, i doubt very much they would use cheap parts given any chance of ruining that reputation.

yes luckily my dads in the building trade and has a van to take me phew.

If thats the case with polygon i may be in touch as the chain has lost loads of links and i would say has clearly been fitted incorrectly as it has jumped of the bottom cog and ruined my engine and the work was done last year so theres no way I can see that this is due to wear or an old chain everything points to neglegence on their behalf? unless anyone can see that this wouldnt be the case?

you could have just been unfortunate enough to have a sub standard but perfectly acceptable chain. If you know what I mean, like a good quality company who got a poor batch of steel and your chain was bashed out with an impurity in the metal. You don't have a leg to stand on I wouldn't have thought but its wort a try isn't it.

Is it just that one piston thats copped it?
If you have to replace 3 valves and 2 pistons and a cam chain you can still flog the engine on afterward and be only a £100 down overall.

Unfortunatly it wiped out one piston and broke the valve which got jamed and now it will need a new seat. I know its also taken some more valves on the 3rd piston as that has some markings where its been touched buy a valve so that would need repairing. If i was going to spend money repairing that engine id get all new valves get the head ported and polished put in new seats then new pistons also new cam chain and all gaskets. At the moment I have very little time to do that plus I fear the bill will probably come out higher than getting another engine :smt012

It does beg the question why the last person changed it as clearly with such a low engine there was no need but the situation is as it is now and its left me in the toad :smt010

Hope to get hold of polygon tomorow but I doubt they will do anything.

Will keep you posted!
