Right, I've just replaced my cam chain and figured I should fiddle with the valve clearance while one of the side covers are off, making it easy to turn over.

The manual only goes as far as to say "adjust" when adjusting the valve clearance. Can one "adjust" valves without replacing shims?

If you can 'shim-lessly' adjust them, how do you?

well... I re-read the manual...and yes, the only way to adjust valves is to replace shims.
