have a zxr400(96 model) , was left outside for 3 months (extended holiday etc), had a bit of trouble starting it at first , but once running it was perfect (nice n crisp), thought id check water/oil etc , & noticed that the engine oil had mixed with petrol , i mean it was right up to the filler cap (8 pints drained out!!)., flushed engine , new oil , seems o.k so far,

, o.k my question is , where the hell did the petrol come from?? worn bores?(plugs look fine , little carbon/soot , no oil at all), any ideas folks?

as far as i'm aware the only way petrol can mix with the oil is if the rings have gone or bores are gouged as you say, are you sure its petrol and not water?

Id also say theres a way through the airbox but the crank breather is right at the top so not much chance of getting in through there.

no water in the engine , the engine oil was very thin & stank of petrol ., today i had it ticking over for 20 mins , when i undone the rad cap about half a cup full of water bubbled out , so its looking more likely a head gasket job (although the temp gauge never goes high even after half an hour ticking over)

I'd say that sounds perfectly normal after running for 20 minutes there will always be some water/coolant overflowing if you open the cap...................

the engine is far from knackered, if you read my posts ., my original question was how come there was oil mixing petrol , since its oil change , there is no further sign of this , the runs perfect., the book price for a 96 l5 model is £1400 , so 900 is reasonable
