I see the principle behind them, its exactly the same as mercury vacuum gauges it seems, but i wouldnt use them either in case you suck in the contents of the pipe.

sorry to resurface this but

I despo need some vac gauges (will be doing the shims soon baz, honest)

The link you posted for the bank of four on ebay Rob, looks ok. But im put off by the fact they aren't all reading the same in the picture. is the quality somewhat inferior?

You mean what the gauges read at 0 vacuum? There is an adjustment screw on the dial do dial them into zero, i bit like a zero knob on an old set of scales. Simply turn the screw to set the dial to zero, give it a suck and let the needle settle make sure is goes to zero again :)

thats exactly what I meant. I'll go ahead and buy a set now that I know they can be calibrated.
