no, you don't "have" to split the cases, you are supposed to .. but it can be done without .. its just a touch tricky.. ive done 4 camchains this year alone, and about 4 or 5 previously, ive NEVER split the bottom end to do it.

its just a case of positioning the teeth on the crank sprocket carefully then easing it off, or grinding away the bit of the lower case thats too close, some bikes have it, some dont..

re tensioners..

early bikes have the type with the bearing race in with the spring and all that gubbins, they are rubbish throw them away!! the bearings wear little notches in the tensioner shaft, after which the tensioner just likes staying there and doesnt tension the chain correctly..

the later type, with the teeth on, which uses the "insert wire here" trick to refit is FAR better.. there are 3 ( i think ) versions of this but they all work the same, its only the castings that differ slightly and thus for practical purposes they can be classed as the one type.

and its an L9 so it'll have the latest best tensioner

nope, there are also some with teeth on but no way of inserting wire anywhere!

ahh .... not seen those before.... how the F*** you meant to put them back in then ?

done it!

was a piece of cake! didnt have to split the bottom end, or grind off the casing, just eased the chain off as i rotated the crank.

only problem is i snapped the oil gallery when i was putting the top end back together.

got a new one on its way, so it'll be up and running again when everything is back from the powdercoaters

some cases have a lip thats *just* too close.. some dont, yours didnt
