return spring on the shift pedal

Does anyone know where the return spring on the shift pedal is located?
I have a problem with my bike after i put the engine back together, the shift pedal won't spring back after the 1st gear is selected.
Then i realised that the return spring has not yet installed, im not sure where it goes, is it go on the outside or inside the engine?
please help.
