Race carb trumpets

Hi all!
I just discovered this forum. Awesome! Anyway, I'm a happy owner of a kawasaki zxr400 L1 since a couple of months. Since the bike needs some spare parts, I started watching autcions on ebay, and I bumped casually into this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ZXR400-RACE-CARB- ... 286.c0.m14
Pics for better explanation:
The owner said he never used them. It's just my curiosity, anyone has any kind of experience with them or at leas knows how they works? Consider that I still have to take a look to see what's going on under the tank of my bike, so take my question as it comes...
Thanx!

i seen them meself...bit on the long side !! haha.. i dont think they will be up to much meself, but i would be interested in trying them.
I use the flat plate type like the ams one. And they work very well mate. My motor went up 8hp, and this is a tuned motor, with a full ram air box and these plate bellmouths. Before it had a standard modded ramair box and bellmouths.
my stuff come from dynoproracing in runcorn
the different heights of the bellmouths do different things i think.. more low end, top end..etc.. just not sure what is what

i saw some bell mouths recently with with holes cut out the side to create a turbulance which was supposed to be better for mixture.
My race bike has ram air and a pipe and is making a healthy 74-75hp which i reckon is plenty enough for most circuits.

Ehm... sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about
"Flat plate type like the ams one" what do you mean?
"Full ram air box" how's different from a "standard modded ram air box"?
I think I still don't know enough this bike to know the engine and tuning details...
Anyway, I live in Zew Zealand, so It'll be difficult for me to pass by Runcorn
So, those trumpets are not in the standard bike as long I can understand (still have to remove the tank and see what's happening down there). My question now is: if I win the auction, can I mount them without any other modification? Or I have to mod the ram air box? Will I notice some difference in performance? Noise?
Maybe it's a stupid question, but I need to start from somewhere...
Thanx

WOW! almost 10hp more! Damn hot! What kind of ram air box? And... ehm... pipe?

they wont fit with the standard airbox, they are designed to be used with one of the many aftermarket airboxes that are available which fully enclose the carbs and collect air under pressure from the front of the bike.

Ahhh ok! I'm starting to understand! I watched some pics and did read some threads. Do the aftermarket airboxes fit in a regular road bike? Or are designed only for tracks? My WOF (the New Zealand version of MOT) is quite close, is it legal? I don't think so, but it's always better ask... who knows.
Anyway thanks for the support so far!

ram air will fit a bike used on the road, but isnt really recommended as its normally run with no air filter, and has little effect below 70mph anyway.

these here dude

are the plate type bellmouths.
I modded my standard airbox with a big scoop to the front of the bike, breather pipes going into the airbox from the carbs underneith and no airfilter. This worked very well on a sightly tuned motor. I then had my motor tuned a bit more, and this setup was almost imposible to get a clean fueling line. was up and down, bogging from to much fuel to dangerously lean. but it made nice hp.
Now, we put a proper big ramair box on, carbs inside,no filter again, and the plate bellmouths.
Now we are getting nicer hp at just over 14rpm. It has the sp cdi on her, and was not dropping off at 14rmp...so i reckon shes probs doin real nicehp at peak revs. The fueling is still not perfect tho, and still has the zxr rich spot in the middle... only custom needles will solve this i think.
dynoproracing might post you some stuff? BBplastics also do very good quality stuff, and also have flat bellmouths .
also. alot of people use the standard L bellmouths on there plate in there ramair boxes, and to good effect to.

From what I've learned, all different types/lengths of bellmouths do is move the power around to different rev ranges. The short or plate types are for more power at higher revs, but you will lose some midrange, not something you want to do for a road bike. Longer ones will give more midrange but take from the top. That's why some bikes will have different lengths on different cylinders to give a better spread.
Those red ones look awful to me, and on a standard airbox would come very close to it's lid so would probably restrict air flow rather than anything else. IMHO, I would avoid.

Ok guys, thanks a lot of all the answers and infos! To day I've learned something new!
Anyway, I think I'll leave everything as it is, and maybe if I'm looking for a bit more power I can go for a can and bigger jets.
By the way, my bike is missin one air induction pipe, and the other one is broken, so is not working properly. Can this reduce the air flowing into the carbs?

don't worry about the hoover tubes, they don't do much to affect performance.
