its normal for the zxr400 to rattle, as Gem says they are well known for a rattly clutch.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Sound like the clutch rattle they are well known for! How long have you had the bike anders? Has it started doing it suddenly or did you buy the bike liek this?

Could be a bit of both the clutch and the cam chain tensioner?

hmmm, dunno if the cam chain would go quiet when you pull the cutch in, but it definately sounds like a clutch rattle.

cam chain isn't going to change with clutch operation. My old engine had a VERY shot clutch used to rattle like a biatch.

It probably gets louder because as the oil warms up it becomes thinner and there less of it round the clutch perhaps?

You could take it out and have a look just to be on the safe side, no harm in checking :smt001

They can make a bit o' noise.

There is noise and noise tho.

My clutch doesn't rattle, it judders like a c*nt on idle.

Pull it in and it goes away.

I'm sure its a duff bearing or worse ..

Sure, zxr's do 'rattle' a bit but mine is clearly suffering something other than the standard 'personality'.

Also, cam chains shouldn't rattle and neither should top ends. If the clearences are set right and the tensioner is working/cam chain is within spec it should be quiet.

BTW it can also be quiet when the valves are way way to tight ;)
