I've Just Nearly Lost My Foot And Crashed!!!

Post by Jamz »

I was just braking for the end of a dual carriageway, slamming it down through the gears and blipping the throttle as normal, when I felt something whack me on the foot HARD.

After a split second I decided that I wasn't dead, so I pulled the clutch in just incase anything of particular importance had fell off the bike.

I still wasn't dead by the time I stopped, so I had a look down at the bike. I thought it'd have to be the brake caliper or the -ing sump to make that big a smack.

Everything seemed to be in place and no fluids were leaking.

I twisted my head around like some safety-conscious owl, but couldn't see the twisted metal bar or branch which I'd surely rode over and flicked up. My visor isn't tinted THAT much, is it?

The road behind looked all clear. :smt017

There's no way I'd hit an animal, because I'd have seen that.

After a few puzzled walks around the bike, I saw my bar end weight was missing from the RHS. Doh!

I've just been told by a garage that this is a pretty common thing to happen, but in my years of riding I've never lost a bar end!

Have any of you got a spare one lay around for a Honda VFR750 FM?

Are they pretty much a universal part?

Has this tragedy befallen me because I blip on the downshifts??? :smt017 :smt002

*the title of this thread may be slightly melodramatic.

Neither have I, but then of the four bikes I've owned, only one has bar ends (the GPz), and given how rusty that is I doubt I could get them off if I wanted to.

Probably universal to hondas of that era.

No, it's befallen you because you've got a screw loose (or used to :smt002 )

The bar end on my gixxer fell off when i was putting the bike into the van for my last trip to the ring. I'm buying some R&G ones because they actually fit in properly!!

the lesson here is make sure your bar ends are in tight and maybe check em every few months or something,. i suppose the vibration could loosen em.

If I'd cable-tied it this would never have happened!!! :smt003

Speaking of the old bike that I'm essentially selling as salvage, though... I wonder if they are the same....

Either yesterday or the day before I actually did a double-take looking at that bar end, because there was a wear-mark on the paint that I'd never noticed before... I gave it a good check, but never checked the actual screw that holds it on (never knew it was held on by a screw!). It all seemed ok - but of course now I realise it had actually turned and was on it's way off... :smt018
