stick a long screwdriver into the plug hole and watch the valves so you can see TDC on compression.

dude, drain the oil into a clean container then put the contents back into the sump when you have finished.

will take all of 2 mins to drop the oil and will make life easier

Why drain the oil when you can do it with the rocker cover off?

If you are checking valve clearances and your doing it with the engine still in the frame there is no need whatsoever to drain the oil.
Do it with the bike on the side stand

The correct position to check valve clearance can be found in the manuals on this site.
You need to remove the ignition pick up cover and use a 19mm scocket to turn the engine over into the correct position.
You can measure 8 clearances at a time so you only need to move the engine over once to the next postion once you've found the first one

While it's more difficult to do this job in frame it is really much easier with engine out

Once you have measured the clearances and found any that need adjustment just remove the shim and measure it then calculate the size of shim you need to bring the clearance into spec.

With an engine on the bench the clearances can be measured in 5 minutes.
It takes about 5 more to remove and replace a shim.

I'm assuming you have all the tools to do this job ?
feeler guages
magnet
torque wrench
vernier guage

And a ready supply of shims is handy

well managed to do it by a bit of nouce and a screwdriver down the plughole. my clearances werent spot on but were pretty good, with 8 of them being out. I managed to make 6 of them good with the others only needing 2 which i ordered off we-moto. I was suprised how the shims werent in buckets... people have told me that some zxrs were but mine arent lol.
i think the furthest out one of mine was is 0.08mm too small on clearance.
cheers
