another one bites the dust...

Post by tobomoto »

had a bit of a toad day today. 10 a.m. got woken by the wench, decided to do an oil change. went to braintree halfrauds for an oil filter, none in. went to chelmsford halfrauds, same story. thought id stop off in a local shop on the way home. didnt make it that far... coming down the chelmsford bypass at the wrong side of 110 (i mean 70 officer) and the fairing decided to snap, come away from the brackets and push me towards the central reservation. went off roading for a bit (about 100 yards) before managing to pull over. bugger. looked at the damage. 1 side panel knackered, front indicator missing, rear indicator missing, top fairing smashed, seat unit cracked, brackets bent. double bugger.

before anyone starts, i have learnt my lesson about speeding. but now ive got a dilemma.do i a) put another standard fairing and seat unit on it?
b) put a race fairing on it (possibly with endurance style lights?
c)) put a race fairing on it and use it in daytime only?
4) put a fairing from another bike (zx6/10r) on it?
then ive got to decide what colour it should be as it needs a new top fairing, side panels and seat panels and the top panel could do with replacing really.

a big thanks to the bloke in the mondeo who stopped and an even bigger thanks to the blokes in the escort who helped get my panel back and hide my race can from the copper who stopped. and to the wench, who gave me a nice big hug :smt058

Damn mate, thats hapened to few on here with panels coming off randomly like that! Jamz and Oli come to mind.

As for a, b,c, or d. Im guessing price is going to dictate what you can have? You can pick a full fairing kit on ebay usually in the region of 300 quid. So theres a benchmark for you. If you get aftermarket stuff you gonna be looking at spraying it on top of the cost of buying.

right ive found a fairing on ebay but its green so ill have to repaint the tank and change the log book. think ive decided to get rid of it now so just wondering what its worth? its a 1994 l4 with 31k on it, engines been ported, polished, skimmed, gas flowed, k&n air filter, micron stainless system with road legal can, platinum plugs. it will have new panels on it and new tyres as mine are near the limit. also has a double bubble screen. it also has hagon progressive springs but standard will be pupplied as well. tax and test are about july time.
bad points are the alternator case has been scraped as has the clip on, it could do with the carbs balancing which i will get done, apparently theres a ding in the front wheel but i cant see anything, and the wheels need to be resprayed which i will probably do in black. im gonna do an oil change on saturday and ive got another shock which ill fit soon as well.
any ideas?

Yeah, mine was a stupid mistake - I'd just had the fairing off to wash it, and left the front bottom faster off because it was awkward to get in and I figured it'd be ok until I got home...

It might have been, if I'd kept the speeds legal down the first dual carriageway I took off down... :smt011

Anyway, bad luck, but whatever speed you're doing shouldn't cause the fairing to give out! Are you sure you put all the screws back in?
Who needs tyres when you've got knees!!

yeah i put all the bolts in but it ripped around the front indicator. i guess there was a bit of a gap underneath to let a draught in and just rip it off. the front fairing was only fibreglass. ill take some pics later.
