Re: Buying New bikes

Post by mongo »

im not meaning to be funny, but unless you are buying a brand new bike to commute on , the versys will commute well, but its a horrible bike. its not something i would jump on to enjoy myself on, its a very dull bike.

Remember all the 0% bike deals going on just now, you are much more likely to lose alot more money on the bike value in a few years, as there will be many more of them around.

Yes ive bought new (brand new zx10r) and its probably worth half of what it was when i bought it 2.5 years ago. I have however and do still really enjoy the bike, its just ticked over 21k miles. It was on 0% finance and im thinking of purchasing something else maybe next year or the year after and keeping the zx10r as well....

This test ride is all about finding out weather its the bike for me, it may well turn out its not, but ive read alot of positive reviews and well aware of some of the niggles it has so we will see when i ride it.

Loosing money on it is playing a big part in the decision on buying a new 2010 bike, used 09 or a new 09 bike, a new 09 is probably going to loose the most money so probably wont do that. If its a good bike and i like it i may well just get the 2010 (wich my heart is set on) model as chances are ill be keeping it for some time as i do most of my bikes and i wont be so concerned as to the loss.

Had the test ride today. All i can think of is how punchy the engine is, that was a complete surprise. It seems to pull from almost anything, lovely little motor.

Handling was a bit so so, but i think a bit of fiddling/work and some decent tyres would sort that. The tyres were hard as anything on the demo bike, it had dunlop sportmax's (standard fitment?) i think and easily locked the front wheel up (non ABS) while seeing how the brakes were in an emergency stop.

Sensation of speed is very isolated, i was doing what i thought was 70, looked down and it was 100!! So wind protection working reasonably well and the motor didn't feel particularly pushed, and not as buzzy as i seem to read either. Mirrors vibrated depending on engine speed, and each mirror had its own engine speed it would vibrate at so it kinda alternated as you went through the range.

The bars felt like they needed to be a bit lower and further away, or maybe just one of those and not both as arms were aching a bit but i think that's more due to me needing to relax. Otherwise position of pegs was spot on and with my skinny backside the seat was huge! The whole body position felt best sat back in the seat rather than up to the tank.

Had a good chat with Gary there who also owns a Versys, offered me £500 off an '09 plate in either black or orange, so £5k for an '09 bike. Release for the 2010 bike he said was March, and hoping they aren't any more than £6K. I can reserve one now if i wanted if i lay down 100 notes.

Cant think of much else, other than it was a better bike to ride than imagined really, and still want one as much as before!

Have to say tho, getting on the ZXR felt well racy after getting off a versys. But in camparison the ZXR dont half fucking handle!!

I bought my 07 ZX6R brand new in 2007, and this year I bought my '09 ER6N brand new. (no finance left on either now - I had saved up to buy a Civic Type R in march, but the ER6N new would mean I had a couple of grand leftover. and cheaper to run, too)

I don't think about the cash value I'll lose.
(obviously)

I just think, I like it, I want it, I'm having it, and I'm keeping it.

I don't plan on ever selling either of these bikes, unless I lose my job and can't get work at pizza hut / mcDonalds / cleaning / anything, but even then, I'd sell all my videogames and lego first, I reckon.

I got the '09 ER6N I use it as a commuter, and to wind up older fireblades / R6s, supersports bikes etc on the commute - as it balances a wheelie with ease and has some good punch off the lights. It a wholly confidence inspiring bike, and I can't wait for the summer to come round again and see what I'm like after riding it all winter. Same engine as the versys but I found it a lot better for the seat height, and strangely the insurance was cheaper than for a Versys - probably the value of the bike?

I wouldn't recommend the ER6N forum though, bunch of whingy old blokes on here, it seems.
Stick to the ZXR world.

(and you can get lower forwarder sports bars for the 6N too, by the way)

Stick to the ZXR world.
I found that on the VFR forums! :smt003

Nobody else seemed to be able to actually RIDE the damned things like they're supposed to - i.e. scraping their knees and stuff everywhere!

It earned me a lifetime ban from there! :pmsl
Who needs tyres when you've got knees!!

i bought a new bike back in '04, i'd just come back out the forces, and bought a RS125 tuono.
i paid £2000 in interest, and the bike lost a grand in a year, god i was a tit!

a few years later, I bought a 2000 model firestorm for £2300, a year later i got £2200 pounds off the insurance, taking off excess. it depends on the bike you buy and what it is going to be considered in the future.

those people who bought a B1H 636 are looking at low residuals, due to desirability, a bit like 600RR's, so a good buy!

read the fine print carefully, 0% interest does not exist. fact. how does a finance company make money? you either get hundreds of pounds of admin fee's, or after three years or whatever, you have to settle the lump sum remaining in one payment. one idiot mate of mine got into this situation on a C2H, he had to find £3000 sharpish to end the thing...

buy nearly new, let someone else lose the first hit, modern engines are solid as anything, running in isn't an issue, and you'll save a few grand shopping around.
Ask yourself if you really need a 09/10 model? i was medium/fast group (depending on circuit) on a lightly modded firestorm, hardly a race-rep!
ameteurs practice and train unitl they can do it, professionals practice and train until they cannot fail at it..

0% is getting my attention too. If it's the right bike, I won't be selling it for years so not worried about the instant value loss.

George White does some insane deals. Akro cans, R&G bungs etc all thrown in. Take a look: http://www.georgewhite.co.uk/

I disagree -
the 0% on a new kawasaki through black horse finance is good:
If you can stump up say £1000 deposit for your new ER6N (book brice is £4200? Haggle them down to £3990 or something.
so £2990 on finance, they stick £140 or so on for your registration and tax for the first year (so make sure you get first service free or something to balance that out) the 36 equal monthly payments of £86 per month. How is that not affordable?

When buying my first ninja (ZX636), I said I could afford £150 month, the bike was up for £6250 i offered him £5200. He accepted it (november, nearly new bike with 1200 miles on the clock, desperate to sell me a bike and I missed out on the B1 I wanted), then I said could we not use the negotiated reduction as my deposit. He agreed, so 5200 on 12 months 0% (it wasn't a brand new bike, but he put it on the finance for 0%) and I paid £144 a month for a while. Then when I had put oodles of miles on it, traded it in for a brand new 07 ZX6R and got £4500 trade in on the newer bike. My monthly finance payments went down to about £94 (fresh finance deal still had some to pay off the original ninja) Then I paid the lot off when my savings were getting so little interest from the credit crunch, and thought I may as well pay off my bike finance then and spend my money.

The finance companies don't make any money. Hence, the credit crunch.
