ZXR400 as my first bike after passing A2?

Hi there, I plan on passing my A2 test soon, gonna get the CBT done (it ran out I'm 19 coming up 20) so have to do it again and get the theory out the way, then do Module 1, then Module 2 then hope to get a ZXR400 and ride it for 2 years, has anybody had these restricted to 33bhp before and do they ride alright with the restrictor and are the baby ninjas alright for pillion, just I've got a missus and she likes the idea of going on the back.

I work during the week, can you book to do your tests on weekends only or not?

Also for a baby ninja how much will I be looking at, I've seen some on ebay for about 1k-1.5k is that about average?

Is insurance okay on these to for a 19yr old?

price of bike: varies alot, u can get them from anywhere between 500-2k, personally id aim for 1k plus, coz chances are itll need less work.
Insurance: well im on third party fire and theft at £900, im 23 in my first year of a restricted license. fully comp is about £2500 lol!
fuel: well some vary dependant of fuel consumption, but id estimate about £15 for 100 miles think i pay £17 for a full tank and it does 108 miles roughly...

again this is all objective as to which bike u get and how u ride and where u ride and everything else and im sure the other guys ave many other answers for u

Just been strolling around lots of comparing insurance companies all night after work, got it down to £690 a year which I can't complain gonna book my theory for two weeks time, then get the rest out the way, looked at the price range I'm gonna go for about a £1,000-1,500 price one in Kawasaki colours, definitely gonna keep the restrictors don't wanna chance riding it illegal just for the sake of horsepower...

I had my ZXR as my first bike, nevermind after my A2.

I found with the restrictors in it, it went still bloody well, it just felt a bit choked above 10k rpm - which you'd expect with the airflow restricted somewhat.

In my experience anything above 12k with the restrictor washers in only seems to serve to p*ss more fuel away than you need - easy on the throttle above 10k basically helped with the economy on mine.

Ah that sounds great, I'm gonna get my theory out of the way in a fortnight to three weeks time, the problem is with Module 1 and 2 is I work all week and once a Saturday in the month, do places still do tests on weekends?

i seem to remeber they do yes but they charge u extra cash for it lol, best off booking it the taking the day off work personally but its on u

Ring around insurance companies and ask for approximate quotes.

It depends on your postcode a lot so find out from the horses mouth.

Just to make you feel a bit queezy I was paying 117gbp for a fully comp classic policy on my ZXR (you need to be over 25 though) and garage the bike.

There decent bikes but there getting on a bit now.

If you buy an older bike with unknown history it might go bang and require a lot of work.

Theres been more than enough horror stories on here of people buying bikes to have them go bang and cost fortunes to fix...

Replacing all the bearings, tyres, chain and sprokets along with head-gaskets, cam-chain and tensioner (all service items tha might need doign on an older bike (i did them on mine!!) and giving it a service, plugs, filter, oil, airfilter

Will cost you around. 500.00gbp.

Not cheap when you add it onto the bike.

Many people have been stung and give the bikes a bad-rep.

The truth is that these 400s are popular among newer riders especially (there are a lot of older collectors and enthusiats on here who have no problems with their machines)

But a long-chain of numpty new riders who don't know anything about service and maintanance and rag it till it dies and flog it does take the toll on the bike.

Shop around and make sure the seller knows the histroy and ideally a bit about ZXR's.

Off here would be a great place to buy one.

If it's a 18 year old kid who doesn't know anything be very cautious.

If you get a good one and MAINTAIN and SERVICE it as needed there cracking bikes and can prove to be very reliable.
