Do you think this may be a restriction? i have heared that jap bikes were sometimes restricted to 5 gears (as they were to be used as training bikes)

I suppose that's possible but I've never heard of it untill now.

Find out exactly what model it is and the year and of course if it's an import or a UK bike

should have 6! how well does the owner know the bike? might just be that they only really know cars and just said 5 gears on the basis of most cars being 5 speed?
I am the bladed one

or he never realised that 1st was down and rode everywhere in 2nd-6th?

i'd have to agree with the consensus that he's just wrong.

Dont think it might be the ZX4 do you? Alot of people get the ZXR400 and ZX400 mixed up. No idea if that has 5 gears or not? Best way to check is to go and look at the front sprocket cover by the left hand footrest, i think theres markings on it to say what gears are where, so should say 1N23456
