wish me luck! - now runs sweeeeet!

Post by RedexRobB »

Had the last of my two exam resists today, and sometime in the next few hours ill be heading home to kent on the train to pick up the ZXR, gonna get it put together, taxed and MOT'd. However, i started it up over the summer and i didnt run the carbs dry, sooooo it could turn out to be a bit of a pig to start later so wish me luck! Gonna buy some carb cleaner just in case!

Im soooooo looking forward to working on it later, im like a little excited school boy!!! :smt040

Yes you can - they're exactly the same, but some companies found people will buy both cans if they label them differently! :smt002

Looks like not enough people wished me luck cos the bugger starts and revs fine, but on tickover its lumpy as toad and wont stay running :smt009

Stripped the carbs and they looked pretty damn clean considering the bike had been sat for the best part of a year, the jets were clean or appeared to be anyway, so put them back together and tried again, still the same. Took the coils to my local dealer and tested those and they were fine. The mechanic there said its more than likely the carbs, i just need to give then a good blast with some air and maybe even get the seismicaly cleaned, as a transparent varnish can build up on them and because of that even tho they look clean they arent.

So next time i go home im taking the cab cleaner with me and giving that a go. Was really hoping that it would run and wouldnt give me any problems but hey ho, im no worse off than before and it will get sorted by the end of the summer with any luck!

So can anyone give me some good advice on carb cleaning?

yeah, im hoping just a spray with some cleaner will do it. Dont wanna have to resort to seismic cleaning! Would you need to agitate it with a brush or anything? In fact, if i get some advice off people ill do a write up on carb cleaning!

pull the main jets, emulsion tubes and pilot jets out and soak them overnight in a sealed tupperware box or jamjar (sealed else the cleaner will evaporate) then make sure all the holes are clear before re-fitting. That and getting rid of any visible mank in the float bowls should be all it needs mate.

see which cylinder isn't firing by getting her running and checking which header pipe warms up last, then pay attention to that one.. new set of plugs would be the next stop, remember that one set of valves will have been open while its been sat allowing that plug to deteriorate as its exposed to atmosphere.

cheers zimm, i had the panels on so couldnt check the headers but with reving it above 4k is was nice n clean so expect they would be just as hot. Problem is keeping it running below 4k as all it wants to do is stop. I guess thats where about the transition is from pilot to main jets. I did take the plugs out, see if i could find out which one was giving me hassle. 1 and 2 are nice n brown, 3 and 4 are a little sooty.

Interestingly, when i had the carbs apart, cylinders 1 and 4 have what looked like 88 jets and cylinders 2 and 3 have 90 jets :smt017 that was the ones closest to the bottom of the float bowl screwed into the 8mm nut. Mixture is set at 2 and a quarter turns out. Needles are N770 (0 or Q needed mag glass).
main jets, emulsion tubes and pilot jets
Only two things i screwed out where the little jets in the 8mm nuts (assuming to be pilot jets) and the flat bladed screw/jet in a recess next to that (assume to be main jets). So whats the emulsion tubes mate?

2 and 3 will have slightly bigger jets as it helps keep the pistons cooler instead of running lean. 1 and 4 run cooler anyway being on the outside of the engine.

when zimm pulled mine apart (when he had it) it was the same but now has 105 in all 4, runs plenty rich as it is so no need to up the middle two as it stands.
