shim removal

Post by RedexRobB »

are they a bugger to get out? Buying the bits i need today and need a magnetic tip tool to pull the shims out. Looking at some of the tips i can buy i can buy them with varying strengths, so do i need a fairly strong magnet to do this?

Cheers :)

Quite easy to do really just prise the rocker arm over or spring down and get the magnet in there. as for strength it will need to be fairly strong the shims are only the size of a watch battery. Also be careful at the chain side not to drop one stuff it with rag or kitchen roll :smt003

10lbs.................x 16 shims thats 160lbs of shims in your engine......................... and theres me thinking about having my crankshaft lightened when all I need is to get some light weight shims :pmsl

I reackon shims are less than 10 grammes each

Seriously it's dead easy to change shims the only tricky bit is discovering what size you have in there and then working out what size you need to put in to get the clearance right.

And of course do be carful you don't drop one into the depths of the engine....................for putting them back in I use a magnetised scribe to set the shim back in and then a non magentised thing to hold it in place whill I take the magnetised scribe away. Some angled tweezers are good as well

Going by the piss taking a magnet with a 10lb field strength should do the job then  Least they shouldnt come off and and go where they shouldnt!

Im quite looking forward to doing it all, got a book somewhere with a chart to help you work out the required size! Just hope i dont need too many shims and can swap some of them round, expensive little things! Just praying for decent weather the day i have time to do it!

After doing my wifes shims you don't really want a very strong magnet for putting the shims back in or it starts to get difficult leaving the shim where its meant to be.
