Hi guys,
This is my first post!!:)
Ok so heres my question...... Do i need to replace the tensioner when i replace the cam chain im having a slightly clingy sound coming from the tank and i had a mechanic listen to the noise he advised me to replace both.... but then i had other opinions saying just replace the chain as the tensioner is a self adjusting mechanism??
Please advise soonest....
Thanx a milion

Re: cam chain and tensioner
If you think about it;
The tensioner has been automatically taking up the slack on the camchain until the chain has reached its wear limit which also means the tensioner has travelled to its thurthest point.
You can reset it but consider that it is as old as your bike and literaly owes you nothing - it has been under tension all those years its easy to imagine that it will be tired.
I change the spring and drift with every cam chain replacement. Also check your blades for wear and replace - again with the age of the bikes I would just do these regardless.
If its an H model then update tensioner (all parts) to an L
I will be overhauling a 25,000 Mile motor soon that has a blown head gasket and it will be getting all of the above done.
MM!

Re: cam chain and tensioner
Hey,
Thanks for the reply! Im from south africa and parts for this bike are really hard to get the cam chain i can bet but the tensioner almost impossible must be imported via the agent which costs a arm and a leg!!
but reading your post makes me think i might as well change the tensioner im sure it had its days
Thanks
