Ok, lets hope it s something that simple. I'll let u know later when I get it out an have a look. Come to think of it, when I had it running for everyone to hear it, it wasn't doing it all the time. Sometimes when you rev'd it, the noise would dissapear. :smt017

Hi guys, engine out and the first thing that caught my eye is the cam shafts. There is red paint on the ends of the cam shafts and does anyone know what these mean? There is also a red paint mark on the cam chain cover at the top of the engine. Whatever they mean, i'm presuming they have something to do with the timing and if they are supposed to be in line then they are way out and we might be on the way to sorting this engine out. I have seen from the manual that the shafts have little marks in the ends as well and they are to do with the timing so i'm gonna get it all to TDC and see if the timing has been knocked out.

Hi again, it looks like the camshaft has skipped a cog as the lines on the cams do not line up with the engine. It looks like it has only moved 1 cog but would that be the explanation for the noise as well? Cam chain is also quite loose, I have play in the chain about 10 ml, probably about the thickness of the chain and a little bit more.

Not sure what the red marks are, sounds like it just might have been the cam chain all along making the noise especially if its quite loose, that would also explain if its jumped a tooth on the cam cog. You need to check the length of the cam chain to be sure its not streched, i think its measured by so many links i think its 20.

Here we are, just checked, yep you measure the chains 20 link length, top of page 4.

http://www.zxrworld.co.uk/Manuals/L%20M ... er%204.pdf

its 20 link length should be 127.0mm ~ 127.4mm service limit is 128.9mm.

I think to get the cam chain out you need to split the block.

Have you checked your valve clearances and cam chain yet?

If your unsure of exactly what do to check these the easiest thing to do would be to take the engine out and bribe a local member to come and have a look.

I'd do it myself but I ain't exactly local.

Any takers to help a Ninja out?

My worst fears are now reality guys! Completely stripped lump and the big end bearing has gone on the 2nd piston. All the other pistons are moving freely on the crankshaft but the 2nd one is really tight. :smt010 :smt010 :smt010
Anyone wanna buy the cams, the head, fuel pump, cam chain and the tensioner? Need to raise cash tobuy new engine now!!

Check the Pistons it could have cold seized mine starting making a tapping noise a few years ago and carried on running fine on a practise day stripped the engine down and found i had cold siezed the engine

Riding mine down the start finish straight at brands it felt like it jumped a tooth on the rear sprocket pulled in to the paddock and it was just tapping away like a tappet on a old car

But i would strip and rebuild the engine if it was mine shouldnt cost that much to do

Lots of Tuners around mate that will do the 400
