NO The tensioner only works in one direction the spring in it applies tension and the ratchet mechinism stops it from backing off.
That is why you must reset it if you remove the tensioner because if you remove it the spring pushes all the way out then if you just bolt it back in the tensioner will NOT just back off. That will leave the camchain under too much tension and you'll end up with a very damaged engine
