Hi There,
I wonder whether anyone can help, I have never really noticed it before but my ZXR400 seems to be making a constant clicking noise and a friend thinks it may be the cam chain tensioner.
Does anyone know where the cam chain tensioner is located on an L model ZXR400? I have looked in the workshop manuals but I can't find it anywhere!
Also, has anyone else had this problem before? Could it be something other than the cam chain tensioner?
Thanks in advance!!

More details required, where does the noise come from, when does it happen etc

Re: ZXR400 Cam Chain Tensioner
Cam chain and tensioner is located on the right hand side of the motor. If the clicking dissapears when you rev it its more then likely the tensioner. Have a listen up at the top end too, may be a valve clearance that needs sorting.

you will better looking at the microfiches to see the tensioner.
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Re: ZXR400 Cam Chain Tensioner
constant clicking could well be an excessive valve clearance due to a worn tappet/cam follower

Re: ZXR400 Cam Chain Tensioner
The clicking does seem to be constant.
I’m going to take a look at the cam chain tensioner tonight and see if it makes any difference.
I am abit of a novice when it comes to engines, are the valve clearances something I could look at? Or would I need to take it to a garage?
Cheers

download the manual (on this site) both the H and the L and read up on the topend -- chapter 4 iirc
checking clearances is fairly simple, replacing a worn tappet, simple-ish, changing shims simple in theory, but drop one in the engine, you're fecked.
i'd offer to do it, but i've no idea where you are..
if its constant and started suddenly,.. its most likely a worn tappett, the hardened coating wears through if the clearances havent been done in ages (they tighten up as the valves recede into the head/stretch) and then wear as quick as if they were made from cheese.
first rule of working on/in engines KEEP EVERYTHING SPOTLESSLY CLEAN, or you'll introduce more wear and tear than you are fixing.
