no spark on 1 n 4

Post by Hig »

JUST WONDERING IF ANY ONE CAN HELP!

STRIPPED MY H2 BIKE DOWN OVER WINTER TO GET THE FRAME N EVERYTHING POWDERCOATED N PLASTICS ALL RESPRAYED.

PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER N NOW ITS NOT FIRING ON CYLINDERS 1 N 4. :smt005

THEY BOTH ON THE SAME COIL, SO TRIED FITTING BOTH COILS FROM MY L MODEL BIKE (SAME PART NUMBER) N STILL NO SPARK.

THE BIKE FIRES NO BOTHER AT ALL BUT IS ONLY RUNNING ON THE MIDDLE TWO CYLINDERS.

ALSO CHECKEDTHE PICKUP SENSOR WHICH IS FINE.
WAS WONDERING IF IT COULD BE THE PICKUP COIL AND HOW HARD THEY ARE TO CHANGE.

ALSO THE BRAKE LIGHT ISN'T WORKING DONT' KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED OR NOT. CHECKED ALL THE CONNECTION NEW BULBS, THE LIGHTS WORK BUT NO BRAKE LIGHT FROM THE FRONT OR REAR BRAKE.

Welcome to the forum mate. Definately sounds like its coil related, as Andy says check the wires you could have them the wrong way round!

As for the rear lights double check the contacts on all the connector blocks and make sure they are clean and properly connected :smt001

Sorry to dissapoint you chaps but it doesnt matter which way the coils wires are as long as green and a red (live) go to 2 and 3 and a live and a black feed 1 and 4 coil. Do a continuaty test from the black wire on 1 and 4 coil directly back to the cdi if that is good check the live feed (red) is good when the ignition is on. It cant be the pick up coil as this is common to both coils.

I've got the same problem. 1 & 4 not firing. Are you suggesting a continuity test by using a multi meter? (Spot the novice mechanic!)

All wires in correct place.

thats quite odd tho, i cant be certain bout H model, but i know with the 1991 - 1995s, maybe more, the red wire to the coil is actually 1 wire, if u follow it, they can be anyway way round, basically, it splits, so if the coil is nackerd ul get no sparks form both, if the black wire is fried the red should stil fire. think that makes sense, antway check continuity coz i had a coil wire break internally, getting high resisitance readings and no spark, cut it off and replaced, fine since.

What if the spark is weak? Surely if it's knackered you might get some spark but something not strong enough?

ye u can get a weak spark i spose, to test sparks i made up a jig, a piece of wood, with 4 holes 8 screws. with a 7mm gap to test coils, only tests if they work but i found a dodgey HT lead that way. cos the sparkswere intermitant. check leads are in properly helps, (thanku so called mechanic)

but ye check leads and caps too coz they can fault. its easy really you'l either hav a bright blue spark, a wussey one or none, then start looking for faults.
