Re: Does your zxr400 have hot starting problems?
well i only went out on it for 2 mins but would it start? seemed like the battery was dead then it just started clicking, then kept turning over without firing, couldn't get the bugger into 2nd gear so couldn't bump start it, thought f*ck it tried again and it fired up straight away? B*stard! double B*stard! now the fuels been in there a while as its been standing since november i believe so probably not gonna help so gonna stick some redex and new fuel in and see what happens tonight.

Re: Does your zxr400 have hot starting problems?
Yes.
L4
Standard filter, afaik.
Spark Plugs unknown, but I'll replace them soon and then report back.
No carb mods,
Micron can, Std downpipes, I believe.
At first I thought it was because I let it starve of fuel by not turning the tap, and that time it probably was. But it's done it to me a couple of other times since, when the fuel tap has been on.

Re: Does your zxr400 have hot starting problems?
My missus has an L1 with the heaters fitted, standard filter and airbox, CR9E NGK plugs. It din't have a problem, until we noticed the exhaust was rusted through. So we fitted a stock exhaust from a later model bike. The difference between the exhausts was that the link pipe from 1 to 4 was missing on the later exhausts. Now the bike struggles to start when hot.
Would this make any difference? I reckon the valve gaps need doing too which might be part of the problem.

valve clearances would certainly make a difference i would have thought, interesting note about the exhaust headers tho'

L2 66000 on the clock, has a mph converter fitted so dont know exact mileage...valve clearances should be fine
Everything standard expect full micron exhaust.
Starts beautifully from cold first time every time!!

The problem i was having is it just wouldnt fire, would turn over and kill the battery. Decided to try giving it a fistful of throttle, fired up dead easy

Re: Does your zxr400 have hot starting problems?
Model & year: 1991 ZXR400 H2
mileage: 53500 km, timing chain and head gasket is brand new, plug have 3000 km, but look nice, light brown
Air filter Std or other: Standard
type & manufacturer of spark plugs: NGK CR9EK
Jet size or carb mods if any: None, standard jets, carbs, air box, endcan etc.
Exhaust system: Standard with empty endcan
start nice when cold.... a pression on the start button and it roaring !!!
when hot two solutions:
- need to open full throttle, and it start without trouble
- seem like the battery is dead.... hard to turn then click click do the relay....
i push it to start and it start, run nicely no trouble, idle like a charm
heat increase friction as the starter cannot turn enought to start ? or electrical trouble ?
any idea ?
Laurent

Re: Does your zxr400 have hot starting problems?
do you have a gasket on the generator cover? just thinking all these problems haven't gone back over the whole thread but didn't someone mention it could be something to do with the generator cover being too close? and the excess heat (possibly wear) causing the crank to stick?
