Cutting out on me
Right, for a few days now ive had a weird problem with my bike cutting out on me,
even while riding. i was riding down the road at around 60- 70 mile an hour, and when
i pulled the clutch in to change gear, the revs instantly dropped straight to 0 and cut out
obviously letting go of the clutch again bump started it., Rid home with no other problem.
Tick over was ok at lights/junctions
Then, on another run home from work it done it serval times, had to brake and keep the
revs up at lights etc, couldnt even get it to bump start again.
been ok for a coupe of days, buts now done it again on the way home and couldnt bump start it
again.
Ive got work tommorow and a bit concerned what it could be?????

Re: Cutting out on me
intermittent, so i guess it could be a loose wire perhaps?

Re: Cutting out on me
are you giving it some spuds on the times before it has cut out, and been taking it relatively easy on the times it hasn't cut out?
These things are sent to try us!!

Re: Cutting out on me
i have a some what similar problem, but this is when the engine gets hot, the bike will just cut out, then u leave it a bit and it will re fire. i am changing the coils, as i have tested, and when hot, the spark is prtty much non existent. i think the secondary coil could be about shagged. will let you know if mine is cured by new coils

Re: Cutting out on me
Long story cut short............last year..........
I built a ZXR400 specially for the Manx........from the day I finished it there were were starting problems....it sometimes took ages to fire up and usually killed the battery trying..............once it did start and got warmed up it was even harder ti get it going again.
While riding it there was a vert strange intermittent misfire not quite off a cylinder or two but nearly.............
Anyway I couldn't figure it out.............I had to ride a very much slower bike in the races
Once I'd got home I checked every bit of wiring in minute detail....and found that the little bit of wire from the pick up coil that is inside the engine csing had got very hard and brittle and was discoloured slightly................... also the was a crack in the insulation.
I replaced the pickup coil and the wire complete and hey presto all was fine ..............same bike is still going really well now.

Re: Cutting out on me
to explain.
i bought mine as a project bike, to do up and ride for a few years. It was a starter, but no mot or tax, so went up to leeds, fired it up, and it went well, brought it back on the trailor. the carbs were mega rich, so i turned them to standard ( 2.25 turns out),
I have changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter,
changed the oil/ oil filter,
new battery,
new spark plugs,
new ht leads,
your coils now fitted,,
checked all the wiring, and it all looks ok,
but what happens is.
from cold will start pretty easy, but today, took a little more guts than usual. After you said about yours, I whipped the engine side off and looked at my coil pick up. it looked ok, but i am no expert, but today, defo took more to start from cold.
Once running, seemed to be running nicely. I left it ticking over, while i fannied round tidying up.
after about 5 mins, i opened the throttle, to which it raised the revs a tiny amount, then cut out.
I tried to fire it back up, but the battery was pretty much flat.
I could jump it, and once again, would run fine, but when it was hot hot, the engine cut out again.
once again the battery seems pretty dead,
also, what it will do is, after about 10 miles riding, if you sit at a junction ticking over, it will cut out.
admittedly. i havent given it a proper ride since the other day, when i opened the side casing and looked at the wires.
one thing of note, the regulator gets mega hot, i mean, it burns u its too hot to touch.
is this right.
i do have a new regulator in the post, but now i am thinking its most prob the pick up coil.

Re: Cutting out on me
i have just checked the wires on my pickup coil.
the yellow one has gone brown inside the casing, and is rock hard, and has a split in the insulation.....
i have ordered a new one.
will arrive tomorrow.

Re: Cutting out on me
ok, a bit of an update for you guys,
fitted new coils, made it slightly better,
fitted new pick up coils, also made the running slightly better,
fitted new rectifier, can now use my lights and battery stays charged.
i still have a cut out problem and re strt, and i think it has to be fueling now.
if i set the tick over at about 1800, it will cut out when standing, after about 15 miles riding. if i take it to 2500 ( using the adjuster), it wont.
it wont how ever restart when hot, just turns, tries to fire, but sounds like there isnt enought fuel for it to go.
i have stripped the carbs, and the main jets are 95, i believe on a h1 they should be 98, but this wont affect tick over.
could it be the fuel pump?
is there any way of by passing the fuel pump ( as i know a lot of bikes use gravity to pull the fuel down.
the fuel pump is the last thing for me to change now,
also, when i beought the bike, it had just had the cylinder head gasket done........... the bloke was a complete fucking chimp mind u,
there was a lot of gasses coming through the breather for the gear box/ clutch, is this normal, or did he not flush the engine properly, as i have pulled this off, rode the bike for a while, and this seems to have dissapeared...... i think

Re: Cutting out on me
mains are meant to be #98, but the #95's wont hurt anything except topend like you say ..
for fuelling to be an issue with hot starting, i'd be checking that the air-jets, pilots and needle jet holders arent blocked, and that the choke cable isnt snagged and holding the choke slightly on.
start it up without the airbox and see if any of the carbs are flooding with fuel when you rev it, sometimes the o-rings that seal the float valve holder to the carb body perish so the bowls flood.. this in turn puts extra strain on the electrics as the pump runs constantly, overheats and shuts down from time to time.
zxr's rely on the pump, bypassing it isnt an option .. kawasaki fitted the same pump to most bike of the same age so anything from a breakers that looks the same will work..
if the head-gaskets been done by a monkey* and there's still steam coming out of the breather.. its possible it needs doing again .. maybe the head wasn't skimmed properly
*might be worth checking the cam timing too.

fancy selling me some then mate
ive still got this problem as ive just spent the last couple of hours getting home from 15 mile away. My old mans had to come out in the car, and jump lead the bike every few hundred yards so i can keep riding and get it home. Whats this wire everyones checking inside the engine casing? Kinda a thicko when it comes to knowing what to look for and what to do but if someone can explain in thick moron terms for me i might be able to sort it.
Seems like the bikes just not holding any charge
