zxr 400 has not been started in two years.
I have just bought a zxr 400 '96, 54000 miles.
It has been sat in a garage for 2 years with half a tank of petrol in it.
What things are essential to do before i try to start it up?
I have been told:
New oil, filter, plugs.
Drain the tank and use some cleaner.
Anything else i should do?

If the petrol hose hasn't been disconnected from the carbs then you will need to clean the carbs as the fuel in the gloat bowls will have turned to varnish and possibly gummed up the jets

Yes a good carb clean first and foremost. Clean the plugs. Put the battery on a slow overnight charge.
I wouldnt bother changing oil and filter till its up and running.b

I just got myself a compressor so I will get cracking with the carbs this week.
Will I need to re-balance the carbs after?
The guy I bought it off said something about DynoJet racing set-up or something, not entirely sure what that is, any ideas?

he might mean that it has dynojet air filter, or dynojet needles and mains (needles will have a moveable clip on them if DJ), or both...but you will need to strip it to see what's what.
everytime you adjust fuelling, balance the carbs...it only takes 5 minutes.

Never heard of a dynojet air filter? And to the original poster if you have a dynojet kit then that's a good thing, or he might be saying that it would make it better, I have one in as my fuelling wasn't perfect but it is now alot better, though you can get the same results by buying everything separately, so pretty much, clean the carbs, clean or replace the spark plugs, clean out the tank and put in some fresh fuel, if your having trouble starting it try warming the plugs, putting a little bit of oil in the cylinders to increase compression also if the pistons haven't moved in two years it would be a good idea to have some lube and try easy start if its being a right pain but be careful because it can soak plugs and stop them sparking properly

I have cleaned my carbs, put new plugs in, oiled up the cylinder, started her up
sounds a bit rough on idle and has a few flat spots up the revs so....
I need to synch my carbs right?
Bought a synch kit and Im about to get myself away, wish me luck, this could really take a while

How's it running now? Did synching the carbs make it better? Or does it still have the flat spots? Did it have a dynojet kit in it?

Re: zxr 400 has not been started in two years.
In the end, original air filter was installed, it definitely needs replaced, another part on the list.
The carbs are back in, shes running nice in neutral, i cant take her out yet.
I noticed a hairline crack in my rear caliper too late, with a seized bleed nut being stubborn i cracked out the wd40 and a blowtorch, the entire bleed nut thread area cracked off, bugger...so gsxr 1000 calipers are next.
Thanks for the help shes alive and kicking! Any problems when i get on the road ill take it to be dyno'd.
Btw i used boiling lemon juice and a compressor to clean my carbs, it worked a treat, i was extremely tempted to buy a sonic bath, they are allways nice to have.

Goof to know, I bought a paraffin parts washer to clean all the old crap of my carbs, whoever had my bike before was a tit! Oily gunk all over them, then cleaned them with carb cleaner and the jets etc in pure acetone
