2 related questions:
If you remove the flywheel, what difference is there in engine characteristics?
secondly, is there a simple soulution to retaining the starter motor if the flywheel is removed?

If you drill the rivets that hold the actual magnet part of the flywheel then it can be removed and the starter gear will still work as it located onto the hub. That way the actual weight of the flywheel doesn't drop massively (although its quite a bit) so any vibration issues are minimised, while the actual rotational inertia is dropped hugely, allowing the engine to spin up quicker. This should give more horsepower as measured on an inertia dyno but won't do anything for the torque. I have it done to an engine of mine but haven't gotten it in the bike yet.
Getting the flywheel off can be a bit of a PITA though.....
