ZXR400 L Rebuild, the begining. (not 56k safe)

Moved it from the garden to the driveway with help from the missus, where it will be for the next few munfs.

started off as this





Today started stripping it.








Got alot done in the 2hrs before the darkness fell upon liverpool.
Need to get a whizzer on a few bolts and drill out a few screws cos they are solid and wont move

Taking it apart is the easy bit, its putting it back together thats the ball ache lol

We were thinking about it. But thinking a bit more, cos this is my 1st project i may try to get it back to stock condition, but with H nose and lights......

you'll need an entire H fairing, screen, clock bracket, lights, clocks and hoover tubes to do that, and even then i think the clipons hit the clocks. And the rest of the fairing brackets dont quite line up.

i got as far as balancing it all together and then decided against. Partly due to the hassles involved, and partly because it looked wrong with the L model tank and tail unit.

if you want it to look like an H, get an H.. i know that sounds glib, its not meant to.. s'just my opinion.

I like the L shpae and styling, but love the twin spots on the front. any way round the shambolic loox that may occur if i just slap on the H plastics?

i did reply in your other thread (hadnt noticed it was the same thread starter)..

problem is that H lights mount to the clock bracket unlike the L which mounts to the nosecone. Thats why you need to swap the whole frontend over also, the brackets dont even line up with the lugs on the headstock, but can be filed to make them fit)

it looks a bit like this

L1 frame modded to take zx6r engine, L tank, L-SP seat unit, H nosecone



the H nosecone and screen is taller than the L's too, which adds to the unproportional-ness of it all.

Just get the H lights and make up a bracket then epoxy it to the l front end, start off with an l race fairing and if it goes tits up its not a lot of money down the drain

ive just bought one the same colour today, full micron system,led bk light, new radiator, just serviced inc valve clearences,new bk tyre,new discs n pads, few more bits done t&t till jan £250!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All thats left on there is the front end with wheel, swing arm and the engine with the carbs.
Im a bit stuck trying to get the carbs off, cant see whats holding them on....
Need a new Oil cooling rad, Main rad and f+r calipers.
Pulled the loom out, im planning on making a new one from scratch using the old one as a guide.
Drained all the oil out the engine cos thats coming to the dinner table next week lol.
Rear wheel come off easily, and the bearings "FEEL" ok.
Chain is buggered, but the F + R sprockets look in good nick

Whats the easiest/best way of removing all the gunk and crud off the parts i removed?

carbs are held on wih jubilee clip type things on the inlet rubbers, undo them and you should be able to prise the carbs off, mine were really tight the first time i took them off, felt like they had been on years but with a lot of wigglin eventually come off, ad for removing gunk the best thing is engine degreaser and a jetwash failing that engine degreaser scrubbing brush and hose

definitely engine degreaser, you can go for GUNK or Halfords do their own version which is very good but half the price. If your gonna build your own loom there is a guy on ebay selling loom kits with all the connectors (bar the rectifier one i believe).
