Fuel system cleaner recommendation

Post by justdan »

Hi guys,

just a quick. I have been using Silkolene Pro FST fuel system treatment over the winter in the last few months but it is kindda expensive but I think I have seen some people use the STP stuff or Redex petrol carb cleaner which are much cheaper so I just wonder if any of you can tell me which is the correct one to use for carburetors. I seems to be able to find one for fuel injection rather than carburetors and they are for car. can it be used for motorcycle too?

Please post the name, link or picture of the right STP or Redex product that I need.

Thanks

Redex do a 'shot' bottle. Chuck it in a full tank of fuel and run that through.

Easy one has 90ml the other has 250ml, what have I won??? :smt003

The mix is 125ml to a 50lt tank, ie a car, so basically work out how much is in your tank, or fill it and do the maths, you will be putting very little into a bike tank, so the bigger bottle will last for ages, not seen the smaller shot??? bottle, it's maybe a one shot deal for a car tank.

I would go with the 250ml clear bottle, easier to mark divisions for each tank of fuel, and see that you're using that amount, with the white shot bottle you'll be guessing.
Pics as requested. :smt002

If you're having cold running issues, probably too late now, but for future reference you can use a hotter plug, a CR8EK will heat quicker and run well at low winter speeds, BUT DO NOT use in warmer weather or if giving it copious amounts of beans.

Personally I'm not a fan of Redex, I don't think it is as effective as Wynns. You want the petrol additive, not the spray can - Google it. And it is far better to add it, run the bike for a handful of miles, then leave it overnight. Dissolves far more crap than just running it straight through as it sits in the carbs and gets to work. I always add a dose after the winter layup, even though I treat the fuel in the system with fuel stabiliser before I store it away.

I've used both Redex and STP, both are basically the same, if I want to go overboard I would clean out my carbs first and then use 125ml of Redex and vpower, but everyone has different methods

Just to be clear, I personally only use Redex to whizz through the lines and pump etc, more prevention than cure, if you have dirty carbs they need a good spa day, Redex will not clean them properly, won't hurt them though.

As I said, stick a shot bottle in a full tank of fuel, no measuring needed. You don't need to put it in every time you fill up either. Once every couple of months should keep things good.
