Electrical problem rev counter,weird

Post by norton57 »

Wondering if anyone can help me.Just put a new battery in my ZXR 400 and when I went to start it, it was running quite sluggish and the rev counter wasn't working at all but all other electrics are. When I let the clutch out fully when in gear, the engine just stalls.Have I fried the cdi unit by accident or am I just missing something.Be great if anyone could shed some light on this.Cheers
Thanks for the advise guys.Just checked the sidestand and thats ok but I've just realised that it is only firing on 2 and 3 as 1 and 4 are cold and I've also noticed there is a black wire with a spade connector come loose from somewhere around the battery box,has this come out of the cdi when I changed battery and where should it go.Thanks to anyone who can help me.Cheers

Easy peasy, check your side stand switch! Theres a cut out switch to make sure you cant pull off with the side stand down. It gets covered in oil and crap being so close to the front sprocket. Theres a rod which slides in and out and sometimes gets stuck in becuase of the crap it gets covered in, fooling your bike into thinking the side stand is down, give it a clean and see what that does for you. That should at least sort the problem of pulling off in gear :)

Not sure about the rest of your problems, did you charge the battery before you put it in the bike? And im assuming the rev counter was working before hand?

Ive heard of the rev counter going funny before, but that was on a knackered battery, thats why i ask if he has charged it.

I think you are being misled Norton :smt017 the black wire you talk of from the cdi is the coil feed for 1 & 4 it also feeds a pulse for the revcounter...so with 1 & 4 cylinders out of action i not suprised it stalls when to let the clutch out. The black wire goes on the larger of the two connecter blocks...bottom left directly below the green :smt002
