newbie here

Post by doml89 »

hi everyone, i thought id join up cuz im looking to take my bike test in the next couple of months and am planning on buying a zxr400. im 18 and live in nottingham, im really into my cars at the min and iv got a nissan almera GTi. iv done a couple of trackdays but am after some thing quicker but fed up with paying loads insuring cars, i was planning on getting a bike next years so i thought i may aswell just get one this year and sell the car. most of my family are either bikers or ex bikers so i think its just a natural progression lol.

can some one give me some facts, figures, info ect on zxr400's? i have researched them but id like to know as much as i can before buying one. also any good sites either about these bikes or just bikes in general.

oh yeh one more thing, what exactly is the deal with the restriction kits? i understand ur only legally allowed up to 33bhp in the first 2 years but do i need a certificate saying the bike is restricted? how much is it roughly to get done and can i take the restrictor off (obviously after the 2 years :smt002 )

cheers

Hi dom :smt006

There's a few people on here from around Nottingham. We'll have to go for a ride once you have your licence.

Best place for facts and figures is the main zxrworld.co.uk site that this forum is part of. There's a huge amount of information on there. If you've got any specific questions you can't find answers to then shout out on here.

As you're under 21, you will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years from your test pass (although a 33bhp ZXR should still be a lot quicker than your car!). This is almost always done by putting restrictors in the carbs - basically four large washers that restrict the airflow from the carbs into the engine. They are easy to put in and even easier to take out.

You don't have to restrict it using an 'approved kit' or have it fitted by a dealer. The important thing is that the bike doesn't make more than 33bhp. You've got two choices.

a) Buy an approved kit, get it fitted by a Kwak dealer, and get the certificate to say they've fitted it. I don't know what it costs but I think it's between £150 and £200.

b) Either buy or have made a set of restrictors (someone on here will be able to tell you the size you need) and fit them yourself. This will cost a fraction of option a), but you don't have a handy certificate to wave in the unlikely event that you had to prove it is restricted. Some people have suggested getting it run on a dyno with the restrictors in and having the readout as proof that it doesn't make more than 33bhp.

Actually, there is a third choice, which is don't restrict it at all. People seem to get away with it but remember that you then aren't riding in accordance with your licence (basically you are riding without a licence) and you wont have insurance (because your insurance requires you to ride according to your licence). Basically don't - 33bhp will still be quick, and you'll have something to look forward to after two years.

Suzuki DR800 - bouncy

i never put restrictors on my bike when i should have. :smt018 but in retrospect i wish i had cos then when you take them out it seems like a new bike (so i was told).
anything is possible with enough time and money. and an open mind...

cheers for the welcome and info guys.

so you haven't actually got to prove to your insurance or anything that it is restricted?
well if i get one that is restricted i will keep it in for abit to get used to the bike ect. im sure it will seem like a different bike wen i take it out though because its pretty much doubling the power. but we'll have to see.

just a quick insurance question. if i decide to sell my car a few months before my insurance runs out (to buy a bike) can i just leave my car insurance running even though i no longer own the car so as i get the years ncb?

thats what i thought, i mean im sure you can insure cars that dont even exsist really, but my only concern is when the new owner insures it if my company will know that there are two policies out on it?

it cant be done like that. asking for trouble unless you know the owner isnt going to use it till your policy is up.

best thing to do is sell your gti and buy a nail off ebay or local rag for 50 quid or whatever and insure that for the remaining months of your policy.

most insurers will allow one chnage of car for free then they charge admin fees for further changes.

it is better informing the insurance company, a few month ago i sold my cbr125 on a saturday morning, could'nt inform them i had sold it cos office was shut..on the sunday the lad who bought the bike was involved in an accident where he f**ked off. A week later i got a letter (think it was) from some one elses insurance cos i was named on insurance for the 125...had to ring them up and explain why my name was still on the bike for the sunday!!
people say that before you die, your whole life flashes before your eyes... make sure its worth watching !! ;-)
